A critical assessment of INPA’s scientific cooperation based on publications from 2004 to 2014 Acta Amazonica
HENRIQUES,Luiza Magalli Pinto; UNGAR,Mark; REBELO,George Henrique.
ABSTRACT In the 1990s, scientific cooperation at the National Institute for Amazonian Research (Instituto Nacional de Pesquisas da Amazônia - INPA), one of the oldest research institutions in Amazonia with the highest regional international cooperation, was dominated by research conducted by INPA’s foreign partners. In this article, the evolution of this situation is evaluated, with the hypothesis that, as the internal and the external environments have changed over the past decade, this should be reflected in more symmetrical research cooperation. The analysis was based on a 2004 to 2014 Web of Science search of scientific production at INPA, from which 786 papers were recovered. The results indicated an increase in scientific production but without a...

This report presents the papers discussed at an EC/INCO-DC-sponsored international workshop ‘Markets, Global Fisheries and Local Development’ held on March 22 and 23, 1999 at the Chr. Michelsen Institute (CMI), Bergen, Norway. The main objective of the workshop was to initiate a debate on how markets impact on global fisheries, and how these in turn impact on the ability of developing fishing nations to improve the welfare of their citizens. The motivation for the workshop stems from the observation that over time two things have happened to the world’s fishing sector. First, through improvement in fishing technology and the activities of distant water fishing fleets, fish exploitation and harvest have become global. Second, with significant technological...

The present report contains the proceedings of the INCO-DEV International Workshop on Information Systems for Policy and Technical Support in Fisheries and Aquaculture, convened in Los Baños, Philippines, 5 -7 June 2000. It was convened to address issues associated with the difficult transition from abundance to scarcity in aquatic resources. Reliable information will spread the right perception of the productive capacity and result in more realistic assessment of decreasing benefits and rising costs. Conservation of aquatic biodiversity, ecosystem approaches to fisheries and aquaculture production and food quality and safety along the entire chain from production to the consumer are key concepts that will govern approaches to aquatic living resources in...

An intercomparison study of the determination of sulfite in tropical shrimps by the West European Fish Technologists' Association (WEFTA) OMA
Luten, J.; Bouquet, W.; Oehlenschläger, J.; Meetschen, U.; Etienne, M.; Stroud, G.; Bykowski, P.; Batista, I.; Vyncke, W.; Stefansson, G..
Eight WEFTA laboratories participated in two series of intercomparison exercises on sulfite determination in tropical shrimps. Samples of tropical shrimps were spiked with sodium metabisulfite (Na2S2O5) and hydroxymethylsulfonate (HMS) at a level of 25-90 mg SO2/kg. Most of the laboratories determined the sulfite content with (modified) methods of Monier-Williams or De Vries et al. The overall mean recovery of sulfite was rather low (47-60%), which may be attributed to an irreversible reaction of sulfite with the tropical shrimps. The repeatability of the methods within the participating laboratories was good. However, reproducibility among the laboratories was...

Compte rendu de mission. Participation aux WG/FTFB, Grid group et joint session FAST-FTFB. La Coruna, Galice, Espagne du 18 au 25 avril 1998 ArchiMer
Bavouzet, Gerard; Priour, Daniel.
The FIFB working group of ICES Fish Capture Committee was hosted in La Coruna, Galicia, Spain from 20th through 24 of April 1998. Prior to this session, a study group met on April 18 and 19 to discuss on the selective grids. Finally, a joint session of both FTFB and FAST groups was held on 25 April. The study group was attended by some 17 scientists of various institutes, the FTFB working group gathered 43 attendees and the joint session 20. Several trends and general remarks are to be noted. As regards the grid group, it is obvious that the selective grids tends to come into general use ; their use may even become imposed. The discussions of the working group were mainly turned on the fishing gears selectivity. We have noted a particular interest for...

Exploraciones oceanográficas y pesqueras en el Mar Argentino y la región adyacente del Atlántico Sudoccidental (años 1874-1993) OceanDocs
Angelescu, V.A.; Sánchez, R.P..
A detailed analysis is presented of the main contributions both local and international to the fields of oceanography and fishery sciences resulting from exploratory cruises carried out on the continental shelf off Argentina and the adjacent oceanic basin of SW Atlantic over the last 100 years. The end of the 19th century is chosen as starting point for this analysis as it marks the beginning of active marine research by Argentine scientists and an accumulation of information on Antarctic and Subantarctic marine organisms in foreign journals. Mention is also made to previous contributions derived from the classic expeditions and global circumnavigation voyages during the 18th and 19th centuries. Although the aims of those were not always strictly...

Governança global. Infoteca-e
BALSADI, O. V.; NASCIMENTO, P. P..

Heterosis and combining ability of dual-purpose tomato hybrids developed to meet family farmers' needs in Brazil and Mozambique Horticultura Brasileira
Graça,António JP; Amaral Júnior,Antonio T; Rodrigues,Rosana; Gonçalves,Leandro SA; Sudré,Cláudia P; Vivas,Marcelo; Melo,Paulo CT.
Brazil is the world eighth largest tomato producer and, within the country, the tomato production chain is segmented according to fruit destination: fresh consumption and processing (industrial supply). In contrast, Mozambique does not have a differentiated chain and cultivars are expected to serve both purposes. As there are no tomato breeding programs in Mozambique, cultivars used in the country come from other regions of the world, including Brazil. This paper describes the development and assessment of tomato hybrids with dual-purpose: fresh use and processing. Five tomato genotypes (B13LD, Castone, Massag-72, "Viradoro", and "Rio Grande") were crossed in complete diallel design without reciprocal, and the general and specific combining ability (GCA...

How Eastern African Countries Are Using Economic Incentives To Make Biodiversity Attractive OceanDocs
Emerton, L..
Between 15-26 May more than a thousand government delegates and non-government observers will gather in Nairobi for the Fifth Meeting of the Conference of the Parties (COP5) to the Convention on Biological Diversity (the CBD). One important agenda item that will be under discussion is the use of incentive measures to support the conservation and sustainable use of biodiversity. This is not the first time that incentives, and especially economic incentives, have been identified as a priority tool for biodiversity conservation. Meetings relating to the implementation of the CBD, at global, regional and national levels, have called repeatedly for the identification, development and use of economic incentives for biodiversity, and for the documentation and...
